Causes of Acid Reflux – In no particular order.
There are so many schools of thought on what the Causes of Acid Reflux are. None can be disproved so it is quite possible that all contribute to acid reflux in some form or another. So without further ado, lets take a look at what causes acid reflux.
Acid reflux causes – A malfunctioning oesophagus
You could have a malfunctioning oesophagus either due to the sphincter valve where it connects to the stomach is not working properly or it is having problems contracting properly and is not moving food the way it is meant to. The lower oesophageal valve (LES) is the valve which is found at the bottom of your oesophagus. When this becomes dysfunctional it will allow the acids in the stomach to regurgitate up in to the oesophagus.
What causes acid reflux – eating habits & Diet
There is a school of thought that believes that acidic reflux disease is caused by our own diet and eating habits. As we get busier and busier we are eating more junk or processed foods. The stomach was never designed to digest these. We are overloading our stomachs with so much processed food that most of the food ends up undigested. These foods which have not been digested end up turning in to acidic waste in ones stomach. As a result, this waste can cause the stomach to spasm which causes an increase in stomach gas that can pop open the LES valve which is sending acids up the oesophagus.
acid reflux cause – aging in adults
There is another school of thought which says that the causes of acid reflux is related to our age. It is believed that as we age, the activity of our stomach reduces which also reduces its ability to produce hydrochloric acid. The reduction in stomach activity and the acid content of the stomach can create a breeding ground for other infections which can cause stomach pain and excess acid productions.
cause of acid reflux – a hiatal hernia
A Hiatal Hernia is a bulging of the stomach in to the chest area.
causes of acid reflux – improper emptying of the stomach
What happens in this case is food sits in your stomach instead of being pushed in to your small intestine. Imagine it being a little bit like a clogged drain. This can also be referred to as a weak stomach because your stomach muscles are not doing their job and contracting properly. Explaining this further, in a stomach there are tiny electrical pulses that contract the stomach at around 3 times per minute. These contractions help grind and push along the food and is a one of the primary causes of acid reflux.
In summation, whatever the causes Acid Reflux are, it is important to recognise that acid reflux is classified as a chronic disease. Most medicines only relieve the burning sensation and other symptoms by inhibiting the production of acid in the stomach. They don’t actually cure acid reflux. The other side affect of using these drugs to reduce the symptoms is that they also can cause other side effects by cutting down your bodies acid production. Some side effects are that the drugs reduce your bodies ability to digest food efficiently which can make you more vulnerable to other diseases and also can increase the risk of food poisoning.
